FAQs
Why Montessori? Frequently asked questions as parents consider the important issues of beginning
their child's education.
Q: What are the unique features in the Montessori classroom?
A: Some of the unique features of a Montessori classroom are:
a. Multi-age learning in the same classroom.
b. Individualized lessons.
c. The freedom to progress at their own pace
d. Practical skills for daily living taught in the Practical Life Area.
e. All activities are sequenced from simple to complex.
f. Each activity is designed to lead a child towards independence, coordination and respect
for themselves and others.
Q: How does Montessori differ from the traditional kindergarten?
A: Below is a comparison published by the American Montessori Society that
contrasts differences between the Montessori approach and the approach that is found in the typical
classroom. (This chart is reprinted by permission and may not be reproduced. Copies may be obtained
by contacting the American Montessori Society or Asheville Montessori School.)

Q:Why does the classroom have children with varying ages?
A:The Montessori classroom has varying ages because Maria Montessori believed
that children flourish in mixed ages. She observed that older children enjoy being a good example to
the younger ones. The younger ones "look up to" the older ones. They are fascinated with the work
the older children choose. It motivates the younger ones to choose challenging work.
Q:What is the Montessori curriculum?
A:The Montessori Curriculum is designed to give each child opportunities to
learn at their own level. All activities are sequenced on the shelves from simple to complex. The
various areas of the classroom include practical life, sensorial (pre-math), language, math, social
studies and science. Each child learns individually in each area of the classroom and is allowed to
progress at their own pace.
Q:What is your discipline policy?
A:The enrollment packet will contain the school's discipline policy which is to
be signed by the parent and returned before the first day of class. Below is summary of that policy.
Asheville Montessori School believes that all children desire to be productive, and in control of
themselves. We also believe discipline should include acknowledging the child's contributions,
respecting his achievements, and praising his progress. To that end, our discipline policy is
designed to help our students develop self-discipline and self-respect.
Beginning with orientation and throughout the school year, the children are made aware of
appropriate and considerate behavior, and why these are necessary for the enjoyment and harmony of
the group. Through gentle reminders and consistent modeling the children become sensitive to the
needs of others, and develop a respect for their learning environment. When a gentle reminder is
not enough the teacher will intervene, respectfully but firmly, to stop the behavior. The teacher
will redirect the child towards more positive, productive activity, so that he is able to feel proud
of himself and his accomplishments.
If used consistently, this positive approach to discipline is extremely effective with most children.
If a child does not respond, parent(s) or guardian will be called for a conference.
Through close cooperation between home and school effective solutions can usually be found.
If a child becomes too disruptive to remain in the classroom her parent(s) will be notified.
In the event that a child becomes extremely disruptive, the child's parent (or guardian) will be notified and expected to retrieve the child as soon as it is feasible.
While a Montessori environment is normally successful with a very wide range of students, nothing
is right for every child. One of our greatest challenges is to be objective, compassionate, yet
realistic in considering the needs of each child as a unique individual. When we fail despite our
best efforts to work with the child to help him/her meet appropriate behavioral expectations within
the school's fundamental ground rules, we sadly and reluctantly must counsel the family to seek out
another school setting in which the child can experience success.
Q:Do you have a lot of "school rules?"
A:The Asheville Montessori School only has two rules for our children.
All behavior will fall under these two rules. First, each child must respect one another. Second,
each child must respect the classroom environment. Through these rules, children are taught to ask,
not to snatch, to be invited, not to invade. When material is used, it is returned neatly and in order.
Q:What ages do you accept?
A:The Asheville Montessori School offers year-round programs for ages 3 to
6. We do have the following entry level skills to help the new child be successful
in the classroom. The child needs to be able to accomplish them as he enters or within the first few
weeks.
1. Follow one direction first time it is given.
2. Use toilet on suggestion (each time) and try to pull up own pants - not training pants.(Please Note: We cannot accept children who are not potty trained.)
3. Sit for 3 min. quietly and listen to a story without interrupting those around him/her with
actions or words.
4. Choose own work independently.
5. Use words to get needs met - must be verbal enough to tell teacher when s/he is hurt, hungry,
tired, etc.
6. Use kind words and touches with friends.
7. Keep things out of mouth.
8. Is comfortable leaving pacifier, blanket, toys, dolls, etc. at home or in the car.
9. Is comfortable separating from the parent (Parent is ready to encourage them to be independent.)
